Washington County jurors shown videos Jennings made after woman’s death, dismemberment

WASHINGTON COUNTY — Kacey Kawika Jennings, 33, stands trial in Washington County Circuit Court after prosecutors revealed that Jennings recorded multiple cellphone videos describing a plan to commit suicide while dismantling the scene of Allison Marie Castro’s death in 2022. The videos were played Tuesday as the prosecution sought to establish the narrative around the events that led to Castro’s death.

Jennings faces four charges in connection with the events of October 2022: capital murder, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and theft of property. Prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty. The defense maintains that the death was accidental.

The case has centered on the relationship between Jennings and Castro, which prosecutors described as volatile following a breakup. According to court filings, Castro was planning to leave Jennings and had begun seeing other people, a prospect Jennings could not accept. Prosecutors allege that an obsession over Castro drove the defendant to act violently and later hide the crime.

Specific evidence regarding the timeline of the crime was introduced Tuesday. Prosecutors explained that Jennings recorded several videos on his cellphone after disposing of the body on or just after Halloween 2022. The frantic nature of these recordings paints a picture of someone struggling with the consequences of his actions while contemplating self-destruction.

In one of the videos shown to the jury, Jennings describes the physical act of suicide preparation. He stated he was preparing to use a 12-gauge shotgun loaded with buckshot. Jennings detailed that he placed the barrel of the firearm in his mouth, placed his finger on the trigger, and held the gun in his other hand at the moment he noted that Castro had walked in from somewhere.
