Walmart Associates Week sets up shop at University of Arkansas | What to know

More than 8,000 Walmart International employees are expected on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville next week for the company’s annual Associates Week, marking one of the largest corporate gatherings in Northwest Arkansas this year.

The event, scheduled from June 11 to June 13, will take place across multiple venues on the Fayetteville campus, including Bud Walton Arena and the nearby Fayetteville Convention Center. Walmart International, which operates in 24 countries, relies on the annual meeting to align leadership and store teams on global strategy, merchandising updates, and operational goals for the second half of the fiscal year.

Associates Week typically rotates between locations, with past events held in cities such as Orlando and Reno. This is the first time the gathering will be held in Fayetteville. The University of Arkansas has served as a logistics partner, providing meeting spaces, dining services, and shuttle operations for the duration of the event.

Local impact

The influx of Walmart employees is expected to bring an economic boost to Fayetteville, with hotel occupancy rates projected to reach 95% during the event dates. Local restaurants, retail stores, and transportation services have also adjusted staffing in anticipation of increased foot traffic.

“We’ve been preparing since March,” said Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan. “When you have 8,000 people coming into the city for several days, coordination between the university, city services, and local businesses is essential.”

The city has implemented temporary traffic rerouting on parts of Razorback Road and West Avenue to accommodate event shuttles. Additional parking has been reserved at the Donald W. Reynolds Center, with complimentary transport to campus venues.

University of Arkansas spokesperson Emily Morse confirmed that the institution is charging standard facility rental rates. “We’re pleased to support Walmart’s event needs while ensuring minimal disruption to our regular academic calendar,” she said.

Security and logistics

Walmart has contracted with local law enforcement and private security firms to manage crowd control and safety during the three-day event. The Fayetteville Police Department will have an increased presence, particularly around campus and major transit corridors.

Employees attending the event are required to register in advance through internal company channels. Walmart has arranged for over 200 charter buses to transport attendees from area hotels to the university each day. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided through on-site catering managed by Aramark, under contract with the university.

While the event is closed to the public, local vendors have been invited to set up at designated areas near the Fayetteville Convention Center. Interested businesses were selected through a procurement process managed by the City of Fayetteville.

Community connections

Walmart’s presence in Northwest Arkansas extends beyond its Bentonville headquarters. The company employs more than 45,000 people in the region, with many based at the corporate office or distribution centers in Springdale and Bentonville. Associates Week is considered an internal event, but it reflects the company’s continued investment in bringing employees together from its global operations.

“This is a chance for our international teams to connect directly with leadership and each other,” said Walmart spokesperson Brooke Buchanan. “Fayetteville’s central location and the university’s facilities made it a natural fit for this year’s gathering.”

Some local organizations, including the United Way of Northwest Arkansas, have coordinated volunteer opportunities for residents during the event, including wayfinding assistance and litter cleanup in high-traffic areas.
