A New York man has been sentenced to 60 years in an Arkansas prison following his guilty plea to the attempted rape of a University of Arkansas student. Steven Torres-Rivera, 32, from Long Island, was convicted on two counts of attempted rape in Washington County Circuit Court. Circuit Judge Joanna Taylor handed down 30-year sentences for each count, to be served consecutively, according to the Washington County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
The incident, which occurred on August 14, 2021, involved a female university student who was attacked while returning from a nightclub on Dickson Street. The student reported that Torres-Rivera, whom she did not know, attempted to forcibly engage in sexual activity with her on the university campus. She managed to fight off the attacker and immediately called 911, prompting the perpetrator to flee the scene.
This case had remained unsolved until recently when advancements in forensic technology and persistent investigative efforts led to the identification and arrest of Torres-Rivera. His conviction and sentencing bring closure to a case that had been a significant concern for the University of Arkansas community over the past few years.
The attack highlighted ongoing safety concerns for students, particularly those living or socializing near campus. The University of Arkansas has since implemented additional safety measures, including increased patrols and enhanced lighting in key areas, to help prevent such incidents.
Torres-Rivera’s sentencing underscores the seriousness with which the judicial system in Washington County addresses crimes of sexual violence. In addition to his prison sentence, Torres-Rivera is required to register as a sex offender, a measure intended to protect the community and prevent future offenses.
This case serves as a reminder of the critical importance of vigilance and reporting in maintaining campus safety. The university and local law enforcement continue to encourage students to make use of available safety resources and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
