More than 120K toys recalled as they may contain asbestos, safety regulators warn

More than 120,000 toys have been recalled after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned they may contain asbestos, a mineral linked to serious lung diseases. The toys were sold at Walmart and Ollie’s Bargain Outlet stores across the country, including multiple locations in Northwest Arkansas.

The recall includes the “G.I. Joe Classified Series” action figures and related playsets, specifically the Cobra Commander figure and the Cobra Island playset. Both were sold between September 2023 and April 2024. The toys were manufactured in China and packaged with a “G.I. Joe Classified Series” label. A full list of affected product numbers and batch codes is available on the CPSC website.

Asbestos, a naturally occurring fibrous mineral, was commonly used in older building materials and consumer goods for its heat resistance. Inhalation of asbestos fibers over time can lead to lung cancer or mesothelioma, a rare cancer affecting the lining of the lungs and abdomen. While the toys don’t pose an immediate danger, the CPSC is urging parents to stop using them immediately and return them to the store for a full refund.

What to Do If You Own One of the Recalled Toys

If you bought one of the recalled toys, check the product number on the bottom of the packaging or on the toy itself. If it matches a number on the CPSC recall list, stop letting children play with it. You can take it back to any Walmart or Ollie’s Bargain Outlet with proof of purchase for a full refund. If you no longer have the receipt, most stores will still accept the item for a refund or store credit.

Walmart stores in Bentonville, Rogers, Fayetteville, and Springdale all received shipments of the recalled items. Some of the toys were also sold online through Walmart’s website and third-party sellers. Parents who bought the toys online can request a prepaid shipping label from the CPSC to return the item by mail.

The recall doesn’t affect other G.I. Joe products or toys sold under different series. It’s limited to specific batches of the Classified Series Cobra Commander figure and Cobra Island playset. Still, if you’re unsure, it’s best to check the CPSC website or contact the store where you bought the toy.

How This Affects NWA Families

For parents in Northwest Arkansas, the recall is a reminder to stay alert about toy safety, especially around the holidays or during back-to-school shopping. Many families shop at Walmart or Ollie’s for affordable toys, and while recalls like this are rare, they highlight the importance of checking for safety notices.

“I always check for recalls after buying toys, especially if they’re from a big retailer,” said Sarah Martinez, a mom of two in Springdale. “It’s scary to think something like asbestos could be in a toy, but I’m glad the stores are making it easy to return them.”

The CPSC is working with retailers to ensure all recalled toys are removed from shelves and online listings. Walmart and Ollie’s have posted notices in stores and updated their websites with recall information. Both companies are also sending emails to customers who purchased the items online, if contact information was provided.

If you have questions about the recall or need help returning a toy, you can contact the CPSC at 800-638-2772 or visit cpsc.gov for more details. The agency also encourages consumers to report any injuries or safety concerns related to recalled products.
