Helmkamp named NWADG Baseball Coach of the Year

Dustin Helmkamp has been named the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Baseball Coach of the Year, capping a strong run leading the Springdale Har-Ber Wildcats. Helmkamp took the head coaching reins in 2019 after spending 12 years as an assistant with the program and has since helped establish Har-Ber baseball as one of Arkansas’s standout teams.

Despite the recognition, Helmkamp remains modest about his role, often crediting the players and community support for the Wildcats’ success. “It’s always about the kids and the effort they put in every single day,” Helmkamp said. “I’m just fortunate to be part of a program where everyone wants to get better.”

Helmkamp’s impact extends beyond just wins and losses. Under his leadership, the Har-Ber baseball program has seen improvements in player development and community engagement — milestones that longtime fans of the program are quick to notice. His emphasis on fundamentals and teamwork has boosted the Wildcats’ profile throughout Northwest Arkansas and the state’s competitive prep baseball scene alike.

One of Helmkamp’s mentors, who has worked alongside him and observed the program’s steady climb, pointed out that his influence reaches into the culture of the team. “Dustin’s dedication to the sport and the players really stands out,” the mentor said. “It’s helped solidify Har-Ber as a place that players want to be, year after year.”

Springdale Har-Ber High School’s baseball program, located just off Johnson Road and known locally for its steady production of collegiate and professional prospects, has been bolstered by Helmkamp’s steady hand. The Wildcats have captured several regional titles over the past few seasons and consistently made playoff appearances under his tenure.

Helmkamp’s experience as an assistant coach for over a decade means he understands the nuances of the game at multiple levels — something that translates to his current role. His approach mixes veteran knowledge with an ability to adapt to new coaching techniques and player dynamics.

This Coach of the Year award arrives as baseball season wraps up, a reminder of the hard work put in by not only Helmkamp but his players and assistant coaches. The recognition adds to a growing list of accolades that show just how far the program has come from when he first took over.

In a town where high school sports are community rituals, especially on fields near the Har-Ber campus, Helmkamp’s leadership resonates beyond the diamond. His work helps sustain local pride in a program that draws players from Springdale’s neighborhoods and beyond, nurturing both talent and character.

Looking ahead, the Wildcats will aim to build on this year’s momentum. With Helmkamp at the helm, expectations remain high for future seasons. Parents dropping off their kids along Thompson Avenue and gathering at Howard Memorial Stadium know the program’s steady climb is about more than trophies—it’s about crafting young athletes into better players and people.
