Fayetteville man’s accounts differed on how woman was shot, prosecutors say

Jennings faces the death penalty in connection with the Aug. 19, 2022, death of Allison Maria Castro in Fayetteville. Prosecutors in the Washington County Circuit Court allege Jennings shot the 28-year-old woman once in the chest.

Jennings, 33, is charged with capital murder, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and theft of property. He faces the possibility of execution or life imprisonment without parole if convicted.

The third day of testimony focused on the immediate aftermath of the gunfire and the differing narratives of what occurred in the apartment at 1110 N. Texas Road. Prosecutors introduced a journal kept by Jennings this week. The entry allegedly states that Castro shot and killed herself.

Defense attorneys have argued that the shooting was accidental. The timeline presented by the defense suggests Jennings told Castro he intended to take his own life. He was reportedly sitting in the apartment they shared, holding a shotgun with the muzzle in his mouth.

Castro came home from work to find Jennings in this state, according to the defense account. She attempted to remove the weapon from his grip. Prosecutors allege that during this struggle, Jennings pulled the trigger, striking Castro in the chest and killing her.

The body was subsequently discovered days later. Prosecutors have indicated the death was followed by the decapitation of the victim’s remains and the disposal of the body in woods near the Benton County line. The specific location of where the journal was found or the details of its possession by investigators were not discussed in court on Wednesday.

Jennings is representing himself in the trial. As the proceedings continue, the jury is being asked to decide between the version of events outlined by the prosecution and the self-reported account within Jennings’s own writings. The trial is expected to continue.
