ENTERTAINMENT: UCA show turns Conway into Sherwood Forest

The University of Central Arkansas (UCA) Summer Theatre is bringing a fresh take on a classic legend to Conway this month with its production of Ken Ludwig’s Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood. The show runs at 7 p.m. Friday, June 25 and Saturday, June 26, with matinees at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 27 and Monday, June 28, all staged at UCA’s Windgate Center for Fine and Performing Arts, located at 2150 Bruce Street.

Ken Ludwig’s version of Robin Hood is no ordinary retelling. It’s a “theatrical reimagining” that blends the familiar elements of the outlaw’s story with Ludwig’s trademark witty dialogue and clever twists. Unlike the usual picture of medieval heroics, this show leans into humor and ensemble energy – Honest, it’s hard not to be impressed at how the team has managed to weave together comedy and adventure in such an accessible way under the local stage lights.

Adrian Hinojosa takes on the role of Robin Hood with Rylee Boles as Maid Marian, leading a cast that brings life to the Merry Men and the infamous Sheriff of Nottingham. Their chemistry and timing keep the story moving briskly, making it fun for families and longtime fans of the legend alike. Shows like this one remind me just how much entertainment can be produced outside the big cities, where ticket prices often climb into the stratosphere. Here, a $15 ticket is a steal for the quality of performance you get.

For Conway residents and those around Northwest Arkansas, this production is a chance to see live theater that feels both approachable and inventive. The Windgate Center provides a professional backdrop, and the show’s timing right around summer means it’s a great way to kick off the season without leaving town.

The UCA Summer Theatre enjoys support from local organizations like the Conway Advertising and Promotions Commission and Engage Management, both of which help keep arts accessible in the region. It’s encouraging to see community support backing a production that brings more than just entertainment—it’s a boost to Conway’s cultural landscape and a platform for young talents to work alongside more experienced performers.

What’s especially cool is how the show balances traditional elements with fresh humor. Instead of the dark, gritty Robin Hood we sometimes see on screens today, Ludwig’s adaptation appears to thrive on lighthearted banter and a fast-paced script, almost like a staged romp through a much-loved storybook. That feel often ends up as a bigger crowd-pleaser in smaller markets, and I’m guessing it’ll be no different in Conway.

The roles demand not just acting chops but a flair for comedic timing, which several cast members bring in spades. Trust me, seeing this kind of energy on a university stage where students, faculty, and local actors collaborate is inspiring. For parents looking for activities to engage their kids beyond screens, a local production like this is a great option that also supports the arts community right here in Benton County.

If you come early, you might snag a spot to take in the Windgate Center’s facilities. While it’s a hub for UCA’s fine and performing arts programs, it’s increasingly becoming a cultural beacon for Conway and its neighbors. With shows like this one, the center helps solidify UCA’s role not just as an academic institution but as a regional arts incubator.

After this run wraps on June 28, the next spotlight in the area shifts to Stage 13’s production of “Legally Blonde Jr.” at Wildwood Park for the Arts. But for now, “Ken Ludwig’s Sherwood” is rightly stealing the scene with its clever script, solid performances, and a chance to step out of daily life and into the mischievous woods of Sherwood Forest—right in Conway.
