Benton County Sheriff’s Office: Bodies found in car near Siloam Springs were woman, 5-year-old boy from Tulsa

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that two bodies found Wednesday inside a vehicle near Siloam Springs were a woman and a 5-year-old boy from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Authorities have ruled the case a murder-suicide, marking the third incident of this nature in Benton County this June.

The discovery came after deputies responded to a report of two individuals appearing lifeless in a car parked off Old Highway 68 near U.S. 412. Upon arrival, the two victims were pronounced dead. The woman was identified as 26-year-old Kena Donshaie Knapper, and the boy was 5-year-old Tyler Zane Winston, both residents of Tulsa.

The Arkansas State Medical Examiner’s office conducted examinations and officially ruled Tyler’s death a homicide and Knapper’s death a suicide. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office has not released information regarding the relationship between the two individuals. The investigation continues as authorities await the final written report from the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory.

While murder-suicides are rare in this part of Northwest Arkansas, the Sheriff’s Office has now recorded three such cases in Benton County this month, raising concerns among local law enforcement and residents. The episodes are unfolding in a county that, unlike dense urban areas, typically reports fewer violent crimes but has seen a recent uptick in these tragic events.

Without question, this adds a somber note to Benton County’s public safety community, which has been managing steady population growth and increasing traffic through Northwest Arkansas. Similar tragedies in larger cities might prompt expansive media coverage and widespread resources, but here the focus remains closely on community support and thorough, respectful investigation.

The location of this incident—near Siloam Springs—places it at the western edge of Benton County, close to the Oklahoma border. This proximity means the case crosses not only state lines but also the attention of regional law enforcement networks. Tulsa’s involvement is especially notable since it underscores the connectedness of our region and the challenges that can arise when personal tragedies unfold between neighboring states.

For those living in Northwest Arkansas, the incident is a stark reminder of the complex social issues that communities face, including domestic violence and mental health crises. It highlights continued needs for resources statewide and across county lines for prevention, intervention, and support services.

This latest case resonates deeply given how uncommon such violent episodes are here compared to much larger metropolitan areas. Still, the quiet magnitude of this tragedy will be felt among residents in Siloam Springs and Benton County as officials work to piece together the circumstances that led to this heartbreaking outcome.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone with information related to the case to come forward, underpinning the community’s role in aiding law enforcement investigations. As the county processes this difficult news, local agencies and nonprofits focused on family violence and child welfare may see increased demand for their services.

Understanding how close to home these tragedies can strike—and how they ripple through families and neighborhoods—is vital. For Northwest Arkansas, balancing growth and community well-being remains a priority, particularly as the region continues to attract new residents and attention from across the country.
