A $15,000 unrestricted award for a visual artist in Northwest Arkansas is now open for applications, thanks to a new partnership between New York-based nonprofit Artadia and 21c Museum Hotel Bentonville.
The funding, which will be awarded later this year, is aimed at supporting a working artist based in Benton, Washington, or Madison counties. Applications open Tuesday and are due by July 16. The winner will be announced in the fall.
Artadia, which typically focuses on artists in larger metro areas like Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles, expanded into Arkansas last year through a partnership with the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute. This latest collaboration marks the organization’s first direct investment in a Northwest Arkansas artist. The 21c Museum Hotel, known for showcasing contemporary art in its public spaces, brings regional visibility and institutional support to the initiative.
What the Award Includes
The selected artist will receive a $15,000 unrestricted cash award—meaning it can be used however the recipient sees fit—plus a solo exhibition at the 21c Museum Hotel in Bentonville. The hotel, located at 110 West Walnut Street, has long displayed rotating contemporary works and regularly draws visitors from both inside and outside the region.
“Unrestricted funding is rare and powerful,” said a spokesperson for Artadia. “It allows artists to think beyond project-based grants and instead invest in their practice, their time, and their future.”
Artists working in any visual medium are eligible, including painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, and installation. Applicants must currently live and work in Northwest Arkansas. Freelance and independent artists are encouraged to apply, as are those who may not have access to traditional grant funding.
Why It Matters for NWA Artists
While the local arts scene has grown significantly in recent years—with new galleries popping up in Fayetteville and Rogers, and major events like the Bentonville Film Festival and Artosphere drawing regional attention—funding for individual artists remains sparse. Most grants in Arkansas are directed toward organizations or specific projects, leaving many working artists to cobble together income through teaching, part-time jobs, or out-of-state opportunities.
“This award is a real acknowledgment of the creative energy here,” said local artist and arts advocate Maria Rodriguez. “It’s not just about Bentonville or Fayetteville anymore. There’s a whole network of artists across the region who are making work that deserves support and visibility.”
Rodriguez, who has exhibited her mixed-media sculptures in venues from Springdale to Siloam Springs, said unrestricted funding can be a game-changer. “When you’re not worrying about rent or materials, you can take creative risks. That’s when the best work happens.”
The award also underscores the growing influence of cultural institutions in NWA. The 21c Museum Hotel, which opened in 2019, has become a regular stop for art lovers and tourists alike. Its galleries are free to the public and feature both local and national artists. The Bentonville location is part of a larger network that includes properties in Durham, Nashville, and Oklahoma City.
How to Apply
Applications open Tuesday, April 2, and must be submitted online at artadia.org by 11:59 p.m. CDT on July 16. Finalists may be asked to participate in an interview process, and the winner will be announced in October. Entry is free, and artists at all career stages are welcome to apply.
Artadia’s selection process is blind, meaning applications are reviewed without identifying information. A panel of jurors with expertise in contemporary art will evaluate submissions based on artistic merit and the potential impact of the award.
For artists in NWA, the award represents more than just a financial boost—it’s a sign that the region’s creative community is being taken seriously on a national stage. “We’ve always been here,” said one local painter who asked to remain anonymous. “It’s nice to finally have someone outside the area notice.”
