Volunteerism and health: Walmart giving $1.2 million for regional center to improve community well being

The Jones Center in Springdale was buzzing Thursday with discussions about community health and volunteerism, as Walmart announced a significant investment to foster both. In front of a captivated audience, it was revealed that Walmart is donating $1.2 million to launch Arkansas’ first regional volunteer center. This center aims to enhance community well-being by strengthening the interconnectedness that comes through volunteer work.

This announcement was part of the Jones Center’s 30th-anniversary celebration, which included a panel discussion featuring local experts. Moderator Celia Swanson guided the conversation with panelists including Tim Grailer, Julie Gehrki, Claude Pirtle, and Ralph Clare. They discussed how forming connections through volunteerism can lead to healthier communities in ways that traditional health care systems might overlook.

Joe Lloyd, representing the Jones Center, emphasized that the new volunteer center will serve as a hub for community engagement. “It’s about creating a space where people can come together to support one another, which ultimately boosts our collective health,” Lloyd explained. The center, which will be housed within the Jones Center itself, is designed to provide resources and opportunities for residents to get involved in local projects.

The link between volunteerism and health isn’t just anecdotal; it’s backed by data. Studies have shown that communities with high levels of volunteerism tend to have better health outcomes. The sense of connection and purpose that volunteering provides can lead to reduced stress levels, improved mental health, and even physical benefits.

Walmart’s Vice President of Philanthropy, Julie Gehrki, spoke about the company’s motivation for the donation. “We see volunteerism as a crucial element in building healthier communities. It’s not just about the individual benefits, but the ripple effect it has across the region,” she said. The investment is part of Walmart’s broader strategy to support local initiatives that drive community development and health improvements.

This initiative is expected to dovetail with other philanthropic efforts in the region, such as those by the Arkansas Community Foundation, which has been active in promoting community well-being through grants and support for local nonprofits.

The new volunteer center is anticipated to open in late 2026, with plans to collaborate with local organizations to identify community needs and mobilize volunteers effectively. Residents will have the chance to engage in various projects, from environmental clean-ups to educational programs, all designed to enhance the quality of life in Northwest Arkansas.

As the event concluded, attendees were encouraged to reflect on their own potential contributions to community health. The challenge posed was clear: How can each of us contribute to making Northwest Arkansas a healthier and more connected place? With Walmart’s generous contribution and the community’s engagement, the future looks bright for fostering a spirit of volunteerism that benefits all.
