UL Solutions expands testing at its Retail Center of Excellence in Lowell

UL Solutions has expanded its Retail Center of Excellence in Lowell to include apparel and textiles testing alongside its existing services for furniture, toys, and electronics. The Illinois-based company opened the laboratory in February 2024, marking a significant increase in testing capabilities available to retail firms, suppliers, and service providers in Northwest Arkansas.

The expansion allows businesses in the region to access a broader range of product testing and quality assurance services under one roof. The Retail Center of Excellence now supports testing across several categories, including apparel and textiles, home and general merchandise, chemistry, electrical and electronic products, furniture, packaging, toys, children’s products, and other retail goods.

“NWA is a major retail hub and we have a good customer base in NWA,” said Steven Bruster, global communications manager for UL Solutions. The company’s decision to broaden the scope of the Lowell facility reflects the demand from local and regional retailers for comprehensive testing options as part of their supply chain management and product safety assurance efforts.

Northwest Arkansas is home to multiple major retailers and numerous suppliers, making product safety testing a critical aspect for maintaining market access and consumer trust. UL Solutions’ expanded laboratory supports retailers’ compliance with increasing regulatory requirements, helping to ensure that items meet safety, quality, and sustainability standards before reaching store shelves.

The new apparel and textiles testing integrates with UL Solutions’ existing expertise in testing furniture, toys, and electronics, providing a one-stop resource aligned with the manufacturing and retail profile of the area. This enables suppliers and service providers in NWA to expedite product development, certification, and quality control.

UL Solutions describes the Retail Center of Excellence as a multi-disciplinary facility. It combines chemical, physical, and mechanical testing capabilities designed to assess product safety, durability, performance, and regulatory compliance. The addition of textile and apparel testing expands its ability to cover consumer goods widely sold throughout the region, which includes major domestic and international brands headquartered in Northwest Arkansas.

The Lowell location now serves as a key testing hub for manufacturers and retailers operating in a complex global market that demands rigorous product vetting. The testing spans compliance with U.S. and international regulations, certifications related to flame retardancy, chemical content, fiber composition, colorfastness, and other apparel-specific safety assessments.

UL Solutions’ investment in the facility—opening initially in early 2024 and expanding shortly thereafter—reflects both regional industrial demands and the company’s strategic focus on bringing testing services closer to significant retail and supplier clusters. Retailers in Northwest Arkansas and the surrounding region can expedite their product release timelines and reduce risks by leveraging local testing resources rather than relying solely on laboratories in distant locations.

The integration of apparel and textiles testing supports the broader retail ecosystem in Benton County and the Northwest Arkansas metropolitan area, which is characterized by a high concentration of consumer product companies ranging from startup suppliers to global retail giants. This expansion aims to enhance the region’s competitive position in supply chain management by providing manufacturers and distributors with trusted testing services that meet evolving regulatory and consumer expectations.

Steven Bruster emphasized the practical importance of the expansion, noting that the Retail Center of Excellence is aligned with the needs of local customers who require testing on a wide array of retail categories. The facility’s capabilities now span key sectors that reflect the diversity of products typically sold by Northwest Arkansas retailers.

UL Solutions continues to build its presence in Lowell, leveraging the city’s strategic location within Northwest Arkansas and its proximity to major retail headquarters. The center supports multiple product categories simultaneously, enabling a unified approach to quality assurance and testing that is tailored to the complexities of modern retail supply chains.

This expanded service offering by UL Solutions in Lowell positions Northwest Arkansas retailers and suppliers with improved access to testing that supports compliance, product safety, and overall quality assurance for a wider range of consumer goods than was possible prior to the expansion.
