UAMS partners with NWACC to support student-athlete health

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has teamed up with Northwest Arkansas Community College to beef up medical support for student-athletes.

Under this new agreement, UAMS will provide annual assessments and injury-prevention services to the student-athletes at NWACC. For a community that treats sports like a religion—whether you’re cheering on the University of Arkansas Razorbacks or watching the Wolves dominate on the diamonds at Barton Creek—this kind of local infrastructure matters. It’s the same practical care you might expect if you watched the Fayetteville Flyers or the Bentonville Bombers; just bringing that standard up to the collegiate level.

Keeping the Play Going

Student-athletes at NWACC, many of whom are working toward transferring to four-year universities or just chasing a state title, are putting their bodies through a lot. Between the sprint drills on the track and the base hits at Tappy Field, injuries are a real risk.

This partnership brings UAMS’s expertise directly to NWACC’s roster. The assessment isn’t just a quick once-over; it’s focused on injury prevention, which usually means pre-season screenings and developing safety protocols designed to keep players on the field and out of the training room. It’s a common sense move in a region where high-level competition is increasingly difficult to reach without top-tier physical preparation.

You see this hustle everywhere in Northwest Arkansas. The drive to be competitive spans from the Little League fields in Rogers to the semiconductor boom in Springdale. By feeding the educational pipeline with healthier bodies, UAMS and NWACC are supporting a broader goal: giving Arkansans the tools to compete anywhere.

The connection between the state’s top medical institution and the region’s community college network highlights how intertwined healthcare and education are becoming here. It’s not just about treating what’s broken; it’s about preventing it before it happens so these young athletes can keep chasing whatever comes next, whether that’s a spot in the pros or a degree in engineering.
