Ashton Jones of Bentonville West High School earned all-state honors after a standout season that included 99 tackles and three interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. The senior defensive back’s playmaking abilities extended beyond defense as he became a dangerous return man during the Class 7A state playoffs.
Jones electrified fans and opponents alike with his kickoff returns in critical playoff games. He scored on a kickoff return in the Wolverines’ victory over North Little Rock, then followed that up by returning two more kickoffs for scores against Conway. His versatility caught coaches’ eyes as he may see time at running back when the fall season kicks off.
Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 175 pounds, Jones combines size and speed with a football IQ that has earned him attention from college programs. After tallying offers from 14 Division I schools, Jones made a verbal commitment to Colorado State, where he plans to continue his football career.
During the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Football Media Day at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale on July 23, Jones expressed his eagerness for the upcoming season. “Honestly, it’s just crazy that it’s here already, and I’m just ready to ball out with my boys,” he said. “I’m here to be a leader and I’m just here to carry the team to wherever we need to go.”
Bentonville West’s football program has benefitted from Jones’s leadership as the Wolverines work toward another strong season in Class 7A competition. His ability to impact the game in multiple phases — defense, special teams, and possibly offense — gives the team a dynamic weapon.
Jones’s growth as a player also aligns with Bentonville’s focus on cultivating local talent capable of competing at the state and national levels. The Wolverines have built a reputation for developing athletes who rise through the ranks and then compete collegiately, reflecting the region’s deepening football culture.
