Sudeikis hosting Walmart celebration

Jason Sudeikis took the stage at Bud Walton Arena on Friday, hosting Walmart’s 56th annual employee celebration — the latest in a tradition of surprise celebrity hosts that brings thousands of workers from around the world to Fayetteville for a week of concerts, tours and recognition.

The “Ted Lasso” star and former “Saturday Night Live” writer kept the crowd on its toes. Walmart keeps the host’s name secret until reveal day, and the already-pumped audience erupted when Sudeikis appeared onstage.

“Honestly, this is the kind of thing that would cost a fortune to attend in New York or LA,” said one longtime Walmart employee from the Bentonville area who attended the event. “But here, it’s just our company celebration. For free.”

The Friday morning show capped a full week of festivities for Walmart employees. Earlier in the week, workers toured the retail giant’s new headquarters campus in Bentonville and visited the Walmart Museum, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the company’s roots.

Blue lights and spotlights filled Bud Walton Arena while camera-bearing drones flew overhead, capturing the energy of what employees have come to expect from the annual bash. The show opened with singer and gymnast Benson Boone, whose performance combined vocals with the kind of acrobatic display that’s become a signature of the event’s production value.

Walmart’s employee celebration has grown into something far beyond a company meeting. Over the years, it’s brought in performers and hosts that would headline arena tours anywhere else. For NWA residents, it’s become a point of quiet pride — a reminder that one of the world’s largest retailers calls this region home, and that its workers get treated to experiences they’d otherwise only see on tour.

Sudeikis, who grew up in Kansas before finding fame in Chicago’s improv scene and later on network television, fit the mold of hosts past: someone with mainstream appeal and enough name recognition to generate buzz on social media afterward.
