State turkey numbers on rise, according to the 2025 Turkey Program Report

Arkansas turkey hunters have reason to look forward to the upcoming season. The recently released 2025 Annual Turkey Program Report from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission shows a promising 22% increase in turkey numbers across the state. Last year, hunters checked a total of 11,332 turkeys during the spring hunting season, marking the first time since 2017 that the harvest exceeded the 10,000-turkey benchmark.

This rise in turkey numbers is attributed to increased reproduction from 2021 to 2023, coupled with favorable weather conditions that extended hunting opportunities. David Moscicki from the Game and Fish Commission noted that these factors have significantly contributed to the upward trend seen over the past four years.

For Northwest Arkansas, these numbers might mean better chances for local hunters. The increase also indicates a healthier ecosystem, as wild turkeys are often seen as an indicator species for the health of their habitat. More birds suggest that conservation efforts, such as habitat management and regulating hunting practices, are proving effective.

The Game and Fish Commission’s report is a valuable resource for hunters preparing for the season. It offers insights into turkey population trends and provides details on hunting conditions across various regions. With the spring season just weeks away, hunters can use this report to plan their strategies and make informed decisions on where to hunt.

The 2026 Turkey Hunter Survey is also available on the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s website. Hunters are encouraged to participate, as this data helps the Commission continue to monitor turkey populations and improve management strategies going forward.

For those interested in a deeper dive into the turkey report or to contribute to ongoing research, the Game and Fish Commission provides online access to these resources at agfc.com. As turkey numbers improve, so does the potential for a successful hunting season, reinforcing the importance of continued conservation efforts across Arkansas.
