Springfield rallies past Northwest Arkansas

The Springfield Cardinals overcame a seven-run deficit to defeat the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 9-8 Friday night at Route 66 Stadium. The rally was capped by Dakota Harris’ 12th home run of the season, a two-out shot in the bottom of the eighth inning off Naturals reliever Augusto Mendieta (4-6).

Trailing 8-1, Springfield (58-53 overall, 27-16 in the second half) staged a comeback that maintained their hold on first place in the Texas League North Division. The Cardinals scored eight runs over the final four innings to complete the turnaround against Northwest Arkansas, which fell to 45-65 overall and 16-27 in the second half.

Maikel Garcia, on a Major League rehab assignment with the Naturals, jumpstarted the rally with an RBI double to right field. He advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a fielder’s choice by Luke Pelzer, who later drove in three runs himself. Carson Roccaforte added a double and scored during the comeback, while Daniel Vazquez contributed with a crucial fielder’s choice. Spencer Nivens scored on a wild pitch, helping to close the gap before Harris’ decisive homer.

Garcia, Pelzer, and Roccaforte each recorded three hits for the Naturals. Garcia scored three times in the game and continued to make an impact during his rehab stint, while Pelzer’s three RBIs were the team’s offensive highlight despite the loss.

Northwest Arkansas maintained an early lead, scoring eight runs by the middle innings, putting themselves in what seemed like a commanding position before Springfield responded. The Naturals will look to bounce back as they continue their schedule against divisional opponents.

The game highlighted Springfield’s resilience and their potent offense, qualities that have been key to their second-half surge in the Texas League. Meanwhile, the Naturals face challenges in closing out games despite strong individual performances, as evidenced by the bullpen’s inability to contain Springfield’s rally Friday.
