Spotlight: Fantasy favorite Leigh Bardugo comes to Fayetteville with Liz Climo and adoptable dogs

Leigh Bardugo will appear at the Fayetteville Public Library on June 14 for the launch event of her new children’s book, “Better Pets,” co-authored with illustrator Liz Climo. The event, scheduled for 2 p.m. in the library’s main meeting room, will feature a reading, audience Q&A, and an opportunity to meet adoptable dogs from local shelters.

“Better Pets” follows siblings Yvette and Evan, who visit a mysterious pet shop that offers creatures far removed from typical cats and dogs. The story blends whimsy with mild peril as the duo navigates choices between a dragon, a kraken, and other fantastical animals. Climo, known for her webcomic “The Little World of Liz Climo” and books like “The Awkward Yeti,” provides illustrations that match Bardugo’s playful tone.

Bardugo, who gained wide recognition for her “Grishaverse” novels and the Netflix series “Shadow and Bone,” has written several young adult fantasy titles, including “Six of Crows” and “The Language of Thorns.” Her shift to children’s literature marks a new direction, though thematic elements of choice, consequence, and subtle humor remain consistent with her prior work.

The event is free and open to the public. Copies of “Better Pets” will be available for purchase through Square Books, the library’s retail partner. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as seating is first come, first served.

More than a book launch

The event doubles as a community initiative to promote pet adoption. In partnership with local animal welfare groups, the Fayetteville Public Library will host several adoptable dogs on site. Families attending the reading can meet the animals and learn about the adoption process directly from representatives of the shelters.

“We wanted to bring something fun to the community while also supporting a good cause,” said library spokesperson Kendra Merritt. “Leigh Bardugo’s book is about choosing the right pet, so having real animals here felt like a natural extension of that theme.”

Bardugo has previously participated in library events across the country, often drawing hundreds of fans. Her appearances typically include discussions of writing process, genre blending, and reader engagement. In recent years, she has expanded into screenwriting, contributing to projects like “The Witcher: Blood Origin” and developing a live-action adaptation of “Ninth House” for Amazon Studios.

For local readers, the Fayetteville stop offers a rare chance to see Bardugo in a more intimate setting. Previous events in larger markets have sold out quickly, with lines extending around bookstore blocks. The library expects strong attendance but has not announced capacity limits.

Liz Climo, a former storyboard artist for “The Simpsons,” brings a distinctive visual style to the collaboration. Her work often features animals in everyday situations, rendered with dry humor and emotional nuance. In “Better Pets,” her illustrations amplify the absurdity of each creature while grounding the story in relatable sibling dynamics.

The book is set for nationwide release on June 14, the same day as the library event. Pre-orders through Square Books include a signed bookplate, while supplies last.

Fayetteville Public Library is located at 305 S. School Ave. in Fayetteville. The event does not require tickets, though visitors are asked to enter through the library’s north entrance on Mountain Street due to ongoing construction. Parking is available in the adjacent municipal garage.
