More than 100 volunteers recently gathered in Bella Vista to participate in the annual Six in Sixty litter cleanup event, keeping U.S. 71 free of debris. Organized by Tim Pschierer, this initiative has been a local staple for eight years, demonstrating the power of community action.
The event, which originated from a post by Pschierer in the “Positively Bella Vista” Facebook group, invites residents to clean a six-mile stretch of U.S. 71 from the Walgreens in Bella Vista to the Missouri state line. The community engages in this effort for just an hour, but the impact lasts far longer.
“Any time I see litter, it’s like my attention goes straight to it,” Pschierer shared, reflecting on his motivation for starting the project. “I always wanted to do an event like this, so now we are actually doing something about it. Over the years it’s gotten better and better and better.”
Participants of all ages and backgrounds come together for the cleanup, donning gloves and armed with trash bags, motivated by the shared goal of beautifying their surroundings. The event has gained momentum each year, with more locals joining the cause and making a visible difference on the highway’s appearance.
The group’s dedication to maintaining the cleanliness of this major roadway not only enhances the visual appeal of Bella Vista but also fosters a sense of pride and ownership among its residents. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when individuals unite with purpose and determination.
Pschierer’s vision has clearly resonated with the community, turning a simple idea into a beloved tradition. The clean-up is more than just a routine task; it’s a celebration of community spirit and environmental stewardship. And as the number of participants grows each year, so does the impact of their efforts.
Such initiatives are vital in maintaining the natural beauty of Northwest Arkansas, and they offer a blueprint for other communities looking to address similar challenges. The ongoing success of Six in Sixty underscores the importance of grassroots movements in effecting real change.
