Six in Sixty litter cleanup going eight years strong as volunteers hit highway in Bella Vista

More than 100 volunteers gathered on March 28 to take part in the latest installment of the “Six in Sixty” litter cleanup event in Bella Vista. Tim Pschierer, who founded the initiative eight years ago, has seen the event grow in popularity and impact over the years. The group focused their efforts along a six-mile stretch of U.S. 71, from the Walgreens in Bella Vista up to the Missouri state line. Armed with trash bags and determination, they tackled the roadside litter in just one hour.

Pschierer birthed the idea in the “Positively Bella Vista” Facebook group, aiming to address what he perceived as a growing litter problem in the area. “Any time I see litter, it’s like my attention goes straight to it,” he shared. His passion for a cleaner community has clearly resonated with many, leading to robust participation each year.

The event’s name, “Six in Sixty,” signifies the six-mile stretch the volunteers clean in sixty minutes. Such a straightforward premise has made it easy for folks to rally around. Over the years, the cleanup has not only become a regular feature of the local calendar but has also reportedly improved the cleanliness of the highway significantly.

In a community where the beauty of the Ozarks is part of daily life, efforts like this are vital. Bella Vista residents often take pride in their surroundings, and initiatives like Six in Sixty foster a sense of ownership and responsibility. The event’s success highlights the power of grassroots action in addressing community issues.

For those inspired to join future cleanups or start similar initiatives, the Arkansas Community Foundation might be a useful partner. They’ve been supporting local projects through grants, aiming to strengthen communities across the state. More information about their work can be found here.

As Six in Sixty continues into its ninth year, Pschierer and his growing team of volunteers remain committed to their mission. If you’re looking to make a tangible impact in your community, consider lending a hand at their next cleanup. It’s a small commitment of time with a big payoff for the scenic beauty of Bella Vista.
