SGS opens new bicycle testing lab in Bentonville, further tying Arkansas to future of cycling

A new bicycle testing lab opened in Bentonville this month, marking the latest move tying Arkansas to the future of cycling innovation. The lab, operated by SGS — a global inspection and testing company — will focus on quality, development and safety standards for bicycles sold across the U.S.

Located near the heart of downtown Bentonville, the facility is part of a growing ecosystem that includes major bike brands, local trail networks and events like the annual Bentonville Bike Fest. That event, which drew more than 180 vendors last year, has become a key gathering for cycling enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.

SGS plans to test everything from frame durability to brake performance, ensuring bikes meet federal safety regulations before they reach consumers. The lab also aims to support product development for manufacturers looking to innovate in areas like electric assist and lightweight materials.

Bentonville’s role in the cycling world has grown steadily over the past decade. With hundreds of miles of trails, including those connecting to the nearby Razorback Regional Greenway, the city attracts thousands of riders each year. Major employers like Trek Bicycle and Specialized have regional offices here, and local startups continue to emerge.

The new lab adds technical infrastructure to that mix. For bike companies, having a testing facility in-state means faster turnaround times and closer collaboration with experts. For consumers, it could mean safer products and more cutting-edge designs coming out of Arkansas.

Local advocates see the lab as another sign that Bentonville is becoming a year-round hub for cycling culture — not just a destination for races or festivals. “This kind of investment helps put the region on the map for product development,” said one Benton County planner familiar with recent infrastructure investments around cycling.

The SGS lab is already working with several U.S. brands, though specific names haven’t been released. Testing services are expected to expand through 2026, with possible hiring plans underway for engineers and technicians.
