Sallisaw Black Diamonds cruised to a 28-7 victory over Rogers Heritage Friday night, improving their season record to 3-0 while dropping the Hawks to 0-3. The game, held at Rogers Heritage’s home field, revealed a dominant performance by the Oklahoma team right from the start.
Sallisaw’s offense clicked early, scoring three touchdowns before Rogers Heritage could get on the board. The Black Diamonds controlled the game both on the ground and through the air, rushing for multiple touchdowns and converting key third downs to keep Rogers Heritage’s defense on their heels. Their opening drive set the tone, ending with a rushing touchdown that energized the crowd and silenced the home stands.
Rogers Heritage managed to get on the scoreboard in the third quarter with a touchdown drive capped off by a pass into the end zone. But it was their only score of the night as the Black Diamonds’ defense tightened up and prevented any further rallies. Sallisaw’s defensive line consistently pressured Heritage’s quarterback, forcing hurried throws and limiting big plays on the outside.
The standout for Sallisaw was running back Jaylen Morris, who racked up over 120 yards on the ground and found the end zone twice. His burst through the interior defensive line repeatedly broke Heritage’s attempts to contain the rushing game. Quarterback Marcus Phillips also added a touchdown on a designed run to keep the Hawks guessing.
On the other side, Rogers Heritage struggled to sustain drives, frequently going three-and-out in the first half. Heritage’s offensive line faltered against Sallisaw’s aggressive front, and their passing game saw mixed results, completing just 40 percent of their attempts. Quarterback Tyler Grant faced constant pressure and was sacked three times, which stalled momentum for the Hawks.
Defensively, Rogers Heritage showed flashes of promise late in the game, with linebacker Connor Talley leading the team in tackles and registering a crucial sack in the fourth quarter. However, the Hawks had difficulty stopping Sallisaw’s balanced attack throughout, especially on third downs where the Black Diamonds converted 60 percent.
This game marks a challenging stretch for Rogers Heritage, who are still searching for their first win this season. The team will look to regroup before facing off against Bentonville East next week, where they’ll need to shore up both their offensive efficiency and defensive consistency.
Sallisaw’s victory in Northwest Arkansas highlights the competitiveness of out-of-state matchups in the region, and they demonstrated why they’re off to a strong start in their schedule. Their next contest will see them hosting Pryor High School, with hopes to build on their undefeated run.
For Rogers Heritage fans familiar with the efforts at the Railyard and across downtown Rogers, this game was a reminder that the Hawks face stiff competition this fall as they try to climb back into form. While community support remains strong, the team’s execution on both sides of the ball will need to improve for them to contend in the coming weeks.
