Ryan Silverfield, Josh Huepel press conferences: Arkansas football falls short in upset bid vs. Tennessee

Arkansas football’s effort to topple Tennessee ended in a hard-fought 24-17 defeat Saturday at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks pushed the Volunteers deep into the fourth quarter, but Tennessee held on to deny the upset bid that had electrified the home crowd.

The Razorbacks showed resilience throughout the game, but critical moments swung the momentum toward Tennessee. Arkansas head coach Ryan Silverfield addressed the media following the loss, reflecting on the team’s performance and near miss.

“We fought hard, played with a lot of heart,” Silverfield said. “You never like to come up short at home, especially in a game like this, but I’m proud of how our guys competed.” Silverfield credited the Volunteers’ defense for making pivotal plays that stifled Arkansas’ offense late in the game.

Offensive coordinator Josh Huepel echoed similar thoughts. “Our guys executed well in stretches, but Tennessee made some key stops when it counted,” Huepel said. “We had opportunities to put more points on the board and have the lead, but didn’t quite finish the way we needed to.”

The Razorbacks’ defense also showed grit in backing the offense’s efforts. Linebacker Cam Settles and defensive back KJ Jackson both noted the energy on the sideline remained high even as the clock wound down. “We never stopped believing we could get it done,” Settles said. “It’s a tough loss but we’ll use this as fuel moving forward.”

Arkansas’ offense leaned heavily on a balanced attack. Quarterback Miguel Mitchell put the ball in the air with calculated precision, while the running game chipped away at Tennessee’s front. Both players discussed how the team can grow from the narrow defeat.

“We showed flashes of what we’re capable of,” Mitchell said. “We just have to clean up some of the mistakes and finish stronger next time.” Running back Ben Bogle agreed, adding that the team’s mental toughness will be key as they turn their attention to upcoming conference matchups.

The game carried significant weight for Arkansas fans, who packed the stadium with palpable energy throughout the afternoon. Though the scoreboard favored Tennessee in the final seconds, the Razorbacks’ effort sparked hope for what lies ahead this season.

Silverfield emphasized the importance of bouncing back quickly. “This is a tough pill to swallow, but there’s no time to dwell. We have to learn from this, keep grinding, and focus on improving for the rest of the schedule.”

As Razorback players and coaches parted ways with handshakes and solemn nods on the field, the determination in Fayetteville was clear: the team is ready to build on the fight they displayed Saturday, even if today’s tally didn’t fall in their favor.
