The Rogers Public Library is open again for the first time since May 2022, when a tornado tore through the building and knocked out power, shattered windows, and left shelves scattered across the floor.
Located on South Dixieland Road near the Railyard, the library has served as a quiet cornerstone of the community for decades. But for the past two years, residents had to make do with a temporary location in the back of City Hall while crews worked to restore the original structure. The $3.6 million renovation included a new roof, updated electrical systems, fresh paint, and restored carpeting — all while keeping the layout familiar for longtime users.
“It feels like coming home,” said library director Sarah Mitchell, standing near the front entrance where a small crowd gathered for the reopening ceremony last week. “We’ve heard from so many people who just missed this space — not just for books, but for study rooms, storytime, and even just a place to sit quietly.”
The damage from the Memorial Day 2022 tornadoes was widespread across Northwest Arkansas, but the library’s closure hit differently for many. Regulars missed the weekday rhythm — seniors checking out large-print books, students camped out during finals week, parents dropping in for children’s programs. The space wasn’t just a building; it was a daily part of life for hundreds.
Inside, not much has changed visually, which was intentional. The same checkout desk sits near the entrance, the local history section still lines the back wall, and the meeting room where the Rogers Genealogical Society meets monthly is back in use. What’s different now are subtle upgrades: LED lighting, improved accessibility features, and a small tech corner with new laptops and printing services.
Mitchell said the return has already sparked renewed interest in library programming, especially among younger families. Storytime is back on the schedule, and a new summer reading kickoff event is planned for early June.
The library is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Sundays. For more information, visit rogersar.gov/library.
