Rogers man gets 20 years in prison for sexual assault

A Rogers man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexual assault, according to court records filed in Benton County.

James Michael Morris, 34, of Rogers, admitted in court Tuesday to engaging in sexual contact with a child under the age of 14. The offense took place in Bentonville, though specific details about the location or timing of the incident were not released publicly. Morris was sentenced by Judge Brad Deitz in Benton County Circuit Court.

Morris had previously pleaded not guilty to the charge, but changed his plea earlier this month. As part of the plea agreement, he received a fixed sentence of 20 years with no possibility of parole or suspension. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender and will remain on the registry for life.

The case was investigated by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Arkansas State Police. Prosecutors with the Benton County Prosecutor’s Office handled the case.

Community Impact

While the case has drawn attention locally, officials have not disclosed the identity of the victim, citing privacy protections under state law. The child’s family has requested that the public respect their space during this time.

For residents of Rogers and surrounding areas, the sentencing brings a measure of closure. But it also underscores the ongoing need for community vigilance and support for survivors of sexual violence.

“This case is a reminder of how important it is for families, schools, and law enforcement to stay connected,” said a spokesperson for the Northwest Arkansas Safe Center, a local nonprofit that supports victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. “We encourage anyone affected by these issues to reach out for help. You’re not alone.”

The Northwest Arkansas Safe Center offers crisis counseling, legal advocacy, and support groups for survivors and their families. They also provide training and resources for community members who want to help prevent abuse.

What Happens Next

Morris is currently in the custody of the Benton County Detention Center and will be transferred to the Arkansas Department of Correction to begin serving his sentence. Under Arkansas law, individuals convicted of certain sex crimes are required to serve their full sentences without early release.

The case has prompted renewed calls for expanded education and prevention programs in Northwest Arkansas. Several local organizations, including the Arkansas Children’s regional office in Springdale, have emphasized the importance of age-appropriate discussions with children about body safety and personal boundaries.

“We know that most assaults happen by someone the child knows,” said a counselor with the Northwest Arkansas Safe Center, who asked to remain anonymous. “That’s why it’s so important for adults to create safe spaces where kids can speak up if something happens.”

Residents looking to support survivors or learn more about prevention can contact the Northwest Arkansas Safe Center at (479) 521-1521 or visit their website at nwasafecenter.org. The center also operates a 24-hour crisis hotline for those in immediate need.
