Returning to your roots

Vertis and Richard Mason found themselves drawn back to Arkansas after years in Corpus Christi, Texas. The climate was a big part of the pull, a contrast to the hot, windy springs of south Texas. While they cherished their life there, including a successful business and a strong church community, the allure of Arkansas’ changing seasons was irresistible.

In Arkansas, spring breathes life into the landscape with dogwoods, azaleas, and daffodils painting over the drab winter scenery. This natural transformation was something that resonated deeply with the Masons. When they began their search for a new home in El Dorado, they stumbled upon a unique property: an old house with an abandoned “beer joint” nestled in a heavily wooded area complete with two small ponds.

The former beer joint was soon removed, making way for a haven where the hardwood forest and ponds provide a natural sanctuary for wildlife. The Masons have been treated to the sight of deer birthing fawns in their courtyard for five consecutive years—one year even welcoming twins. This communion with nature is part of what makes Arkansas such a special place for them.

“Most of Arkansas fits what I consider a climate sweet spot,” Richard says, appreciating the state’s ever-changing weather. It’s this unpredictability that keeps the Masons engaged with their surroundings, constantly offering new scenes to discover and enjoy.

For many in Northwest Arkansas, this sense of connection with the environment and community is part of what makes the area a desirable place to live. The Masons’ story echoes the experiences of other residents who have found fulfillment in returning to their roots or discovering new ones in NWA.

For those considering a move or looking to deepen their ties to the community, there are numerous opportunities to get involved. Local organizations, such as the Bentonville’s Samaritan Community Center and Cross Church NWA, offer meaningful ways to connect with others and invest in the community’s future.

The Masons’ journey back to Arkansas is a testament to the compelling draw of home, where the landscape and community offer a rich tapestry of life and belonging.
