David Czerniak, 62, of Paris is facing federal charges after prosecutors in Boston accused him of sending threatening communications to two Massachusetts members of Congress. Czerniak was arrested Wednesday and made an initial appearance in federal court in Fayetteville on Thursday.
Honestly, seeing a name from our side of the state pop up in a federal indictment from halfway across the country—especially when the stakes involve violence against politicians—is a heavy reminder of how the internet erodes boundaries between local and national safety.
Czerniak was indicted on two counts of interstate transmission of threatening communications by a federal grand jury in Massachusetts. Under federal law, those aren’t misdemeanor offenses; they’re felonies that can land a person in prison for serious time.
The case is tied to messages left on voicemail around Feb. 7, 2025. According to the indictment, Czerniak referenced a 2022 shooting at the headquarters of Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organization founded by political activist Charlie Kirk.
“Remember what happened to Charlie Kirk?” the indictment alleges the voicemail said, referring to the incident where a gunman opened fire at the organization’s Atlanta headquarters, injuring three people. Following that mention, Czerniak allegedly threatened Massachusetts Representatives Edward Markey and Jake Lynch, according to the release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.
You look at the news from a major city like D.C. or Boston, and they deal with this kind of escalation all the time. But down here in Northwest Arkansas, when it impacts someone from Logan County and gets bounced between Boston and Fayetteville? It feels immediate.
The U.S. Marshals Service got involved early. While the news release lists Czerniak as a resident of Hatfield, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office jail log lists his city of residence as Paris. Either way, he’s a neighbor to a lot of folks in these rural communities.
Right now, he’s locked up in the Logan County Jail. He’s being held not just on this new federal charge, but on a hold for the Marshals, meaning local agencies are doing the heavy lifting holding federal property until transport options can be worked out.
It’s a logistical dance that highlights how federal crimes often require state resources to manage. The Fayetteville appearance on Thursday was his first step in the system, but the real work—and the consequences—happen in Boston. He is scheduled to appear in federal court there at a later date.
In 2025, we’ve seen the lines between public office and public safety blur as people take to social media and voicemail to express escalating anger. Federal prosecutors in Massachusetts don’t seem to be taking these threats lightly, and the Logan County Sheriff’s Office isn’t letting this slide.
