Police officers honored for heroic actions during Fayetteville shootout

Four Fayetteville police officers received the 2026 Police Officer of the Year Award from the Arkansas Association of Chiefs of Police for their actions during a shootout at an apartment complex on September 7, 2025. Sgt. Levi Samuels, Cpl. Jason Bailey, Detective Bobby Vongphachanh, and Officer Joseph Burns were recognized for their role in protecting the public and ending the critical incident.

The Fayetteville Police Department acknowledged the officers’ efforts in a social media post, highlighting their courage, selflessness, and dedication to community safety. “Their actions that day exemplify the very best of law enforcement and serve as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices our officers are willing to make,” the department stated.

The incident unfolded at a Fayetteville apartment complex last September, requiring swift and decisive law enforcement response. While details of the shootout remain limited publicly, the honors confirm the severity of the event and the officers’ pivotal role in diffusing the threat.

Each recipient holds a distinct role within the department: Sgt. Levi Samuels coordinates operations; Cpl. Jason Bailey supervises patrol activities; Detective Bobby Vongphachanh conducts investigations; and Officer Joseph Burns serves in patrol duty. Their combined efforts during the emergency illustrate the department’s integrated approach to crisis situations.

The Arkansas Association of Chiefs of Police established the Police Officer of the Year Award to recognize exemplary service and acts of heroism in law enforcement. This year’s selections from Fayetteville underscore the challenges faced by officers in Benton County and across Northwest Arkansas.

This recognition places focus on the practical risks police face while maintaining public safety in NWA communities. Fayetteville, with a population approaching 90,000, has seen growth that brings increased demands on municipal services, including law enforcement. Incidents involving firearms, such as the 2025 shootout, remain a critical concern for police and residents alike.

In recent years, Fayetteville police have invested in training, community engagement, and tactical preparedness to respond effectively to violent incidents. The awards highlight officers who applied those skills under intense pressure to prevent further harm.

This event and subsequent commendations reflect broader law enforcement dynamics in the region, where departments navigate both expanding populations and complex public safety challenges. Fayetteville’s leadership and officers are engaged in ongoing efforts to balance proactive policing with community trust.

Authorities continue to encourage residents to stay informed about safety resources and maintain communication with law enforcement. The department’s public messaging after the awards emphasized the importance of cooperation between police and citizens to enhance security.
