Police: Man identified as possible suspect in Fayetteville shooting dies after apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound

A man believed to be involved in a Fayetteville shooting Thursday afternoon died later that day from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Fayetteville Police Department confirmed.

Police responded to reports of shots fired near the intersection of North Washington Avenue and East Sutton Street shortly before 3 p.m. on September 3. Witnesses described seeing a white man wearing a red basketball jersey leave the scene on a motorcycle. One bystander also spotted the man later in the driveway of a residence along the 300 block of North Washington Avenue.

Officers located a vehicle connected to the suspect and stopped it within the city. During this stop, the man sustained a gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The Fayetteville Police Department identified the man as a possible suspect in the initial shooting but has not released his name pending family notification and further investigation. Authorities have not provided any additional details about the shooting itself, including whether others were involved or if there were victims.

North Washington Avenue has been a corridor of concern in recent years due to occasional spikes in violent incidents, though the area generally sees heavy patrols from Fayetteville officers. The police department is continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses to determine the motive and exact circumstances that led to the shooting.

The Fayetteville Police Department asks anyone with information about the incident to contact their tip line. They have confirmed no immediate threat to the public related to this case.

This unsettling series of events unfolded within sight of local businesses and several residences just blocks north of Fayetteville’s downtown square. Residents and visitors passing through were reminded once again of the unpredictable risks that lurk even in familiar neighborhoods.

Details remain limited as the investigation is ongoing. The Fayetteville Police Department has not scheduled a press conference but said updates will be released when appropriate.

The death of a suspected shooter following a police vehicle stop is a rare and complex situation generating a mix of community concern and questions about how events escalated so quickly. The incident underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in addressing violent crime while prioritizing public safety.

For anyone living along North Washington Avenue or nearby East Sutton Street, the area returned to its usual rhythm Friday, underscoring the resilience of Fayetteville’s neighborhoods despite moments of disruption.
