Outdoor Events: Take a walk through Bentonville, clean up Kings River

This Wednesday, families in Bentonville have a chance to stretch their legs, explore a little local trail, and do something good for the neighborhood — all before most kids finish their afternoon snack. The Ozark Hill Hikers are hosting a community walk that’s equal parts exercise, sightseeing, and civic duty.

The walk starts at 9 a.m. at the Casey’s on SE J Street in Bentonville. From there, participants will carpool a short distance to the trailhead, where they can choose between a 5K or 10K route. Both paths loop along Coler Creek, pass under the “singing bridge,” and wind by the Airship Cafe. It’s a pleasant morning walk that also doubles as a cleanup effort — so bring a reusable bag or two if you can.

Kids of all ages are welcome. The terrain is manageable for older elementary kids, and younger ones can tag along in a stroller or carrier. The whole thing lasts about two hours, depending on how often you stop to look at the creek or chat with other walkers. Registration is $4 per person, and while pre-registration isn’t required, showing up early helps.

If you’re new to the area or just looking for a low-key way to spend a weekday morning, this walk offers a nice introduction to some of Bentonville’s quieter corners. Coler Creek runs through the heart of town, but it’s easy to miss unless you’re on foot. The “singing bridge” gets its nickname from the sound the wind makes as it passes through the structure — a detail most people only notice when they slow down enough to hear it.

Good for Families — and the Environment

The cleanup aspect is simple: participants are encouraged to pick up any trash they see along the trail. Most years, the group fills several bags with bottles, wrappers, and whatever else has blown in from nearby streets or parking lots. It’s not a formal conservation project, but it adds up. One morning of walking and talking can leave the creek looking a little better than it was the day before.

Parents who’ve attended in the past say it’s a nice break from structured activities. No sign-ups for teams or gear checklists. Just show up in comfortable shoes and bring however many kids (or dogs) you want to bring. Some families bring their own water, but there are usually refill stations nearby.

The Ozark Hill Hikers host walks like this throughout the year. Membership is optional — $12 a year if you want to stay on the mailing list and get early notice of events. But you don’t have to join to participate. Walks are open to the public, and the group tends to be friendly about answering questions on the spot.

This particular walk doesn’t require a lot of planning. If you’re home Wednesday morning and thinking about getting outside, it’s just a short drive from most of central Bentonville. The hardest part might be waking up in time.
