On the road again: Arkansas baseball heads to Kansas after brief stop in Fayetteville

The Arkansas Razorbacks baseball team hit the road again Wednesday afternoon, boarding buses in Fayetteville for a drive to Kansas City as they prepare for the NCAA Tournament’s Lawrence Regional.

Players and coaches departed Baum-Walker Stadium around 3:30 p.m., ending a short but welcome break in Northwest Arkansas after a grueling 12-day stretch that included games in Kentucky and the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Alabama. The team will spend the next several days in the Kansas City area before opening tournament play Friday at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence, Kansas.

Head coach Dave Van Horn gave the team some rare downtime, canceling practice on Monday and Tuesday to let players mentally reset. “I felt like from what I just witnessed for the last 11 days, these guys needed a break,” Van Horn said. “They needed to just get away from baseball a little bit.”

While some players took full advantage of the time off, others used the break to work indoors on hitting mechanics or recover from the physical toll of near-constant travel and competition. The Razorbacks wrapped up their SEC Tournament run just days before, falling to Tennessee in a winner-take-all game that sent Arkansas to the regional round as a host team.

This weekend’s regional in Lawrence will mark the latest chapter in what’s already been a long season for the Hogs. Arkansas (38-23) earned a No. 2 seed in the regional and will face the winner of Thursday’s play-in game between Oral Roberts and Bryant. The Razorbacks’ pitching staff, led by starters like Connor Noland and Hunter Fauver, will be key as they look to advance out of the double-elimination bracket.

For fans in Northwest Arkansas, the team’s brief stopover in Fayetteville offered a rare chance to see the players up close. Several athletes were spotted around town, grabbing meals or grabbing some sun before heading back on the road. The team’s return to Baum-Walker Stadium, even briefly, also gave local supporters a moment to rally behind the Hogs ahead of another high-stakes tournament series.

Van Horn, who has led Arkansas baseball for over two decades, knows the drill. The Razorbacks have made frequent trips to regionals in recent years, building a loyal following and a reputation for competing in the sport’s toughest conference. This year’s squad features a mix of seasoned veterans and young talent, including standout performances from players like Braydon Webb and Jackson Welch.

Looking ahead, the Razorbacks will need to be sharp in Lawrence. The regional format leaves little margin for error, and Arkansas will likely need to win three or four games in five days to punch a ticket to the super regional round. Weather, travel, and a tough opponent lineup could all play a role in how far the team advances.

For now, though, the focus is on Kansas. The Razorbacks are aiming to make some noise in the postseason and keep their season going as long as possible. With a strong fan base that travels well—and a track record of showing up in big moments—the team carries more than just local pride into the weekend.
