NWA outdoor events: Walk, hike or volunteer, opportunities abound

Northwest Arkansas is calling all outdoor enthusiasts with a bounty of opportunities to explore nature, get active, and contribute to the community. From hiking trails to fishing lessons to volunteer events, there’s something for everyone this spring.

The Hill ‘N Dale Hiking Club invites both seasoned and novice hikers to embark on a 2.3-mile trek this Wednesday at Lost Valley, located near the scenic Buffalo National River. With its lush landscapes and the potential to witness dazzling icicle formations, Lost Valley offers more than just a walk—it’s a feast for the senses. Those interested in joining can find further information at bvhikingclub.com or reach out via email.

For those who prefer casting a line to hitting the trails, a free beginner’s fishing class will be held at the Janet Huckabee Nature Center in Fort Smith this Saturday at 10 a.m. This session is perfect for aspiring anglers eager to learn the basics of fishing. Attendees will get hands-on experience with rod and reel types, bait and lure selection, and the art of knot-tying. Educators from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, along with staff from the Fort Smith Boys and Girls Club, will be on hand to guide participants as they try their luck at Wells Lake. No preregistration is required, so feel free to drop by and dive into the world of fishing.

The Ozark Hill Hikers are also hosting a community walk on April 21 at Lake Fayetteville, providing another chance to enjoy the great outdoors with neighbors. This event encourages participants to take a leisurely stroll while appreciating the calming beauty of the lake, making it a perfect outing for families and individuals looking to unwind and connect with nature.

Beyond recreation, Northwest Arkansans have ample chances to give back to their community. Local foundations, such as the Arkansas Community Foundation, continue to foster community engagement through various initiatives, underscoring the region’s strong spirit of philanthropy.

Whether you’re looking to stretch your legs on a hiking trail, learn a new skill by the water, or simply enjoy a peaceful walk by the lake, Northwest Arkansas offers a plethora of ways to connect with nature and community. So lace up your hiking boots, grab a fishing rod, or just head out for a walk—there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the season.
