Beaver Lake Volunteer Day is set for Saturday, with work crews expected to swarm Hickory Creek Park at 8 a.m. to tackle the brush and debris lining the shoreline. A cleanup crew will hit the water early to haul plastic and cans from the banks, followed by a concentrated litter removal session from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Those who pitch in get lunch afterwards, along with prize drawings and information from local education booths about the watershed. Getting the trash out of the water matters to the anglers who depend on the reservoir for income and sport. The Saturday outing at Hickory Creek Park offers a practical way for residents to give back to a natural resource that defines the local economy and landscape. After the work is done, there is a quieter way to move through the area. The Ozark Hill Hikers are leading a walk in Fayetteville on Wednesday, inviting anyone with a pair of walking shoes to the Greenway. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. at the Walgreens on South School Avenue, directly across from the bicycle shop that revs its engine every morning.
The walkers will pick up on a designated route, choosing between a 5-kilometer loop or a longer 10-kilometer jaunt that cuts through the downtown historic district and by the University of Arkansas campus.
The fee for the walk is $4, a modest price for the freedom to wander the Razorback Greenway and see the town from a different angle. For those who realize they enjoy the stroll, membership in the Ozark Hill Hikers costs $12 for the full year, with a prorated rate of just $1 for every remaining month in the calendar right now.
