NWA outdoor briefs: Walk among wildflowers; tournament anglers catching bass

Springtime in Northwest Arkansas is a sight to behold, especially when the wildflowers start blooming. If you’re looking to make lasting memories with your family, the Ozark Society’s Sugar Creek chapter is hosting a series of Wildflower Wednesday walks throughout April. These walks offer a chance to explore trails adorned with vibrant wildflowers and are perfect for families with kids who love the outdoors and discovering nature’s beauty.

The first walk kicks off on Wednesday at 10 a.m. on the Dogwood Trail at Withrow Springs State Park in Madison County. Each walk lasts up to two hours, providing plenty of time for kids to soak in the fresh air and get up close with the wildflowers. The walks continue on April 8 at the Sic A More Trail in Bella Vista and on April 11 at Smith Creek Preserve near Boxley and Big Sugar State Park in Pineville, Missouri. The Sinking Stream Trail at Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area will host a walk on April 15, with details for the April 22 walk still in the works.

If hiking and stunning views are more your family’s speed, consider joining the Hill ‘N Dale Hiking Club for a 2.7-mile trek to Hawksbill Crag near the Buffalo National River. Known for its breathtaking views, Hawksbill Crag is a popular spot for both locals and visitors. All hikers are welcome to join, making it a great opportunity to meet other outdoor enthusiasts. To get more details, interested hikers can reach out via email to the club.

For those who prefer a bit of competition alongside nature, the tournament anglers of Northwest Arkansas have been busy catching bass. This could be a fun spectator sport for families with older kids curious about fishing and local wildlife. Watching seasoned anglers in action might even inspire your family to try fishing in one of the many nearby lakes.

Whether you’re marveling at wildflowers, hiking to scenic crags, or watching anglers reel in their catch, there are plenty of family-friendly outdoor activities happening this month in Northwest Arkansas. Don’t forget to pack water, snacks, and perhaps a camera to capture the adventures. These outings are more than just a day in nature—they’re an opportunity to create cherished family memories.
