NWA outdoor briefs: Volunteer at river, trail cleanups

The seventh annual Illinois River Cleanup will take place from 9 a.m. to noon this Wednesday, focusing on the river, its tributaries, and surrounding roadways within the Illinois River watershed. This event calls for volunteers at 15 different cleanup sites, all aiming to enhance the natural beauty and health of the region. Participants will be rewarded with a lunch at the Illinois River Watershed Sanctuary in downtown Cave Springs following their efforts.

In addition to the river cleanup, Pack Rat Outdoor Center in Fayetteville is offering a “Backpacking 101” program from 5 to 7 p.m. on the same day. This educational session, priced at $10, will cover essential backpacking skills such as water treatment and food resupply logistics. More information and registration can be found on their website at packratoc.com.

For those interested in a more leisurely outdoor experience, the Ozark Hill Hikers invite walkers to join them in Bentonville this Saturday. Registration is set from 8:30 to 9 a.m. at Casey’s convenience store located at 100 S.E. J St. There’s a $4 fee for participants, with the walk beginning and ending at Park Springs Park. This event offers a chance to enjoy the local scenery while engaging in a healthy activity.

These activities highlight the community’s commitment to both maintaining and enjoying the natural landscapes of Northwest Arkansas. The Illinois River Cleanup, in particular, plays a crucial role in preserving the watershed, which is vital for local ecology and recreation. Volunteers at this event contribute directly to the environmental health of the area, making a tangible difference in their community.

Engagement in these events not only supports environmental stewardship but also fosters a sense of community among participants. The combination of educational opportunities and active involvement creates a comprehensive approach to outdoor awareness and conservation. Whether through direct action like the river cleanup or educational programs like Backpacking 101, residents of Northwest Arkansas have multiple avenues to take part in preserving their environment.
