NWA outdoor briefs: Spring break outdoors; Friday is for fishing

Spring break in Northwest Arkansas is shaping up to be an adventure-filled week with a range of outdoor activities and volunteer opportunities on offer. From hiking trails to fishing tournaments, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in the great outdoors.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is stepping up with several engaging activities at their nature centers, including the Hunt Family Nature Center in Springdale and the Janet Huckabee Nature Center in Fort Smith. Whether you’re a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or just looking to try something new, these centers offer a variety of nature activities during spring break.

For those folks who prefer hitting the trails, the Hill ‘N Dale Hiking Club is hosting a 4-mile hike this Wednesday at Gentry City Lake and the Wango Tango trail in Siloam Springs. It’s a perfect opportunity to soak up the natural beauty of the area. If you’re interested, you can find more details on the club’s website or by reaching out via email.

If you’re more of a water lover, you’ll want to mark your calendar for a free boater education course offered by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. This six-hour course, taking place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Ponca, aims to promote safety on the water as we head into the warmer months. Whether you’re new to boating or just need a refresher, it’s a great way to ensure you’re prepared for a safe season.

Fishing enthusiasts will also have a lot to look forward to this Friday with a day dedicated to fishing activities. As Jon Stein, a fisheries biologist with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, knows well (having spent time fishing for black bass at Swepco Lake), the local waters offer a bounty of opportunities for anglers. Swepco Lake, near the Flint Creek Power Plant west of Gentry, maintains warm water temperatures throughout the winter, making it a year-round fishing haven.

So dust off those hiking boots, grab your fishing gear, or just bring a sense of adventure. Northwest Arkansas is serving up plenty of ways to shake off the winter blues and embrace the spring sunshine.
