Norwood feels prepared by many mentors to lead the Cardinals

Slade Norwood is ready to step up as Farmington High School’s new starting quarterback after moving to the school as a junior and spending his first season behind Ayden Lester, the former Cardinals star.

Norwood credits a team of mentors, from coaches to teammates, who helped him prepare for his leadership role on the field. Joining the Cardinals from another school, he moved into a community with a tight-knit football culture where the quarterback spot carries a lot of expectations.

Throughout his junior year, Norwood absorbed lessons not just on plays and strategy, but on the responsibility that comes with being the offense’s leader. Farmington coaches focused on developing his decision-making and confidence during games, gradually giving him more snaps and input.

One factor easing the transition was Lester’s mentorship. Despite competing for the same position, Lester took time to help Norwood understand the playbook and navigate game-day pressures. “Ayden was always available for pointers, whether it was about reading defenses or managing the huddle,” Norwood said.

Farmington’s coaching staff also plays a central role in Norwood’s growth. The offensive coordinator, well known locally for adapting game plans to fit the quarterback’s strengths, has tailored practices and meetings around Norwood’s learning style. Assistant coaches emphasize fundamentals like pocket awareness and progressive reads, skills that become second nature under their watch.

Norwood’s teammates, many of whom remember Lester’s era fondly, welcomed him with open arms and high standards. Team captains have taken it upon themselves to support his leadership development, encouraging open communication and accountability among players.

As Farmington prepares for the upcoming season, there’s a clear sense that Norwood’s preparation runs deeper than physical drills and playbooks. The Cardinals’ offense aims to be more dynamic and unpredictable in 2026, leaning on Norwood’s ability to read defenses quickly and keep plays alive with his legs.

Farmington’s fans along Allen Street have good reason to keep an eye on the Cardinals this fall. Norwood, with the backing of a robust support system, embodies both patience and readiness—qualities that make for a poised quarterback stepping into a big role.

What lies ahead is a chance for Norwood to build on the foundation laid by his mentors and teammates, carving his own path in Farmington football history. With the blend of experience he’s gathered, the Cardinals could see a quarterback who not only passes well but leads with a crafted balance of calm and competitiveness.
