New European flights out of Philadelphia next year available through XNA connection to PHL

American Airlines added four new Europe-bound flights from Philadelphia International Airport last week, significantly expanding the travel options for Northwest Arkansas residents connecting through Highfill.

The airline announced the expansion of its service from its Philadelphia hub to more than 20 European destinations, according to an Aug. 27 news release. Travelers looking to escape the Ozarks for the spring and summer will find a direct route from XNA to Philly on American Eagle, followed by a connection to new cities starting in March.

Routes are rolling out this year

The schedule starts with a trip to Porto, Portugal, on March 28. Then come May 6 and 27, when flights will launch to Vienna, Austria, and Barcelona, Spain (or Reykjavik, Iceland, depending on flight demand).

Look, having direct access to Philly through XNA has been a game for the region’s business community and families for a while. It saves a haul down to Little Rock. But connecting that Philly hub to the rest of Europe means we aren’t just sitting in the terminal waiting for connections that might not make sense for our schedules anymore.

Northwest Arkansas National Airport staff confirmed the news after American’s announcement, noting that this addition makes the XNA-to-PHL link even more critical for Arkansans trying to reach the Old World efficiently.

For comparison, getting to many hubs on the East Coast or in Europe usually requires a layover in Dallas or a three-drive-hour jaunt to Little Rock. This cuts that down to one hop in Highfill.

More than just vacation

This isn’t just for getting a margarita on the beach in Barcelona. The week of May 27 is stacked with options. If you like music, Reykjavik is a gateway to that scene. If you prefer history, Vienna offers more museums than you can shake a stick at. And Porto has transformed from a hidden spot with great port wine into a serious food destination.

The economic impact here is real. Northwest Arkansas has people doing business, teaching, and studying internationally. When that connection is streamlined, it keeps the hustle going here while keeping the world accessible. We aren’t trapped by geography anymore, and this just tightens that leash.

For those planning ahead, now is the time to start watching the calendar. March is just around the corner.

Quick guide to the new routes:
• Porto, Portugal: Starts March 28
• Vienna, Austria: Starts May 6
• Barcelona, Spain & Reykjavik, Iceland: Starts May 27
Access: Available via direct American Airlines flight from XNA (Highfill) to Philadelphia, connecting to Europe.
