McCollum released from jail after posting bond in criminal cases

Austin McCollum was released from the Benton County Jail Tuesday after posting bond in connection to two criminal cases.

The former state representative and current Republican nominee for Benton County judge had his total bond set Monday at $225,000. That amount included a $150,000 cash-only bond and a separate $75,000 cash or corporate surety bond. McCollum had to post $157,500 to secure his release.

Benton County Circuit Judge Brad Karren imposed several conditions during a hearing Monday that allowed McCollum’s release. Those conditions included a prohibition on any contact with his wife and an order to wear an ankle monitor. The judge also mandated McCollum maintain a minimum distance of 1,500 feet from his wife’s residence, workplace, and church.

McCollum, 35, of Bentonville, was initially arrested on August 1 and charged with felony stalking and violation of an order of protection. At that time, he posted a $10,000 bond with similar no-contact restrictions. On September 29, he was arrested again in relation to those same charges, leading to the increased bond amount.

According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office website, McCollum’s release came after he met the bond requirements following the September arrest. The case has drawn attention, given McCollum’s political position as a candidate for Benton County judge.

Judge Karren’s conditions aim to enforce distance and monitoring while the legal process continues. The ankle monitor and no-contact order reflect the court’s concern over repeated violations alleged in the stalking case.

This latest development follows a series of legal actions that have played out over the last two months. McCollum’s initial release after the August arrest was under more lenient bond terms, which expanded after the subsequent September charges.

McCollum’s case remains open, and additional court dates have yet to be scheduled publicly. The restrictions set by Judge Karren indicate the court is prioritizing personal safety as the legal proceedings continue.

With Bentonville’s local political races heating up, the spotlight on McCollum’s legal troubles adds an unusual layer to the upcoming election cycle. Residents watching the Benton County judge campaign may find this case influencing local dialogue moving forward.
