The Arkansas State Chili Championship, known locally as “Chili in the Grove,” will return to Prairie Grove on Oct. 17, bringing a full day of cooking competitions, tastings, and fundraising events to Mock Park. The event is expected to attract dozens of chili teams and enthusiasts from across the region for what has become a staple fall tradition in Northwest Arkansas.
Last year’s competition featured more than 18 teams, including entrants from as far as Muskogee, Oklahoma. Participants competed for top honors judged by local officials and food experts, culminating in awards for first, second, and third place chili recipes. Richard Millsap, a contest participant from Muskogee, was pictured savoring his chili during the 2025 event held on Oct. 18.
This year’s championship promises a similar level of intensity and community engagement, with teams preparing a variety of chili styles for both professional judging and public tasting. The event also serves as a fundraiser, with proceeds supporting local causes and organizations in Prairie Grove and Benton County.
Mock Park, the longtime venue for “Chili in the Grove,” offers an accessible outdoor space that can accommodate the hundreds of attendees expected for the Oct. 17 event. The park’s central location in Prairie Grove allows easy access for residents across Northwest Arkansas and neighboring states.
In addition to the chili competition, attendees will find vendors, music, and family-friendly activities throughout the day. Organizers emphasize the event’s role in community building and local economic support, as it draws visitors who contribute to small business revenues in Prairie Grove.
While “Chili in the Grove” runs its course this fall, regional food culture also garnered national attention recently when Lasang Pinoy, a restaurant notable in Northwest Arkansas for its Filipino cuisine, was named in a New York Times list celebrating restaurants worth traveling for. This recognition highlights the growing diversity and culinary craftsmanship in the local dining scene alongside traditional events like the chili championship.
