JOIN US AT WORLD REFUGEE DAY

Canopy Northwest Arkansas will host its annual World Refugee Day celebration Saturday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fayetteville Town Center. The event offers a chance for the community to come together to recognize the stories and contributions of refugees making new lives in Northwest Arkansas.

This gathering creates space for refugees and longtime residents to connect over food, music, and cultural displays. It’s a day when the diverse experiences of newcomers are seen and heard, grounded in the realities of their journeys rather than abstract headlines.

World Refugee Day 2026 will feature booths where attendees can explore traditional crafts and cuisine, and learn about the refugee resettlement process through local organizations. Canopy NWA will be on hand to share how they assist families adjusting to a new community, including helping with housing, employment, and education.

Volunteers will be busy behind the scenes and on site, supporting the event as well as welcoming families who may be experiencing their first big public celebration since arriving in the region. Many of these volunteers have been part of refugee assistance efforts year-round, often driving long distances or adjusting schedules to meet specific needs.

For some children attending, this festival means picking out their first backpack or sharing smiles while trying new games. For their parents, it’s a moment to breathe a little easier, knowing there’s a wider network ready to support the next chapter.

As the event unfolds in Fayetteville, those who have settled in Northwest Arkansas will have an opportunity to share their stories, and those curious about refugee life can ask questions and find meaningful ways to help. It’s not a spectacle but a simple space where everyday resilience meets community hospitality.

Canopy NWA encourages anyone interested in learning more about the refugee population or wanting to get involved to attend. Their work is ongoing beyond this day, and getting involved ranges from volunteering to donating specific items that help families feel at home.

Community members who want to make a difference can also consider how their faith communities play a role. Local churches and organizations often partner with Canopy to provide support, whether through tutoring, mentoring, or helping newcomers navigate job hunting.

The World Refugee Day event is a reminder that Northwest Arkansas is a place where people arrive carrying a range of stories — from survival to hope — and the region’s strength lies in how those stories intersect and grow. Canopy’s gathering offers a practical reminder of this ongoing journey and the hands and hearts helping along the way.
