Friday night at Wildcat Field in Springdale saw a thrilling finish to a day of baseball action, as the Springdale Har-Ber Wildcats managed to edge out Maize (Kan.) in an extra-inning nail-biter. The game was part of the Rogers Baseball Four-State Festival, and it certainly didn’t disappoint the hometown fans.
The Wildcats kicked off the day by making quick work of Park Hill from Missouri, securing a decisive win through the run-rule. But the real drama unfolded in their second game against Maize, where Har-Ber had to dig deep to secure a 7-6 victory in eight innings.
Har-Ber, now sporting an 8-4 record, initially jumped to a 6-1 lead. However, that cushion vanished as Maize mounted a spirited comeback to tie the game. It was senior Murray Acuff who played the hero in the end, delivering a clutch opposite-field single that brought courtesy runner Will Daniel home from second base. As soon as Daniel touched the plate, the Wildcats erupted in celebration, knowing they had clinched a hard-fought win.
Acuff’s timely hit was his only one in the matchup, but it was the one that mattered most. Reflecting on the moment, Acuff admitted, “I was just trying to find a way to do a job.” He noted that he might have swung a bit too aggressively earlier in the at-bat, missing for strike two. But with the game on the line, he adjusted and delivered when it counted. “We battled and just never quit fighting, and I’m really proud of the guys,” Acuff added.
Har-Ber Coach Dustin Helmkamp shared Acuff’s sentiments, commending his players for their resilience. “We knew they weren’t going to make it easy,” Helmkamp remarked, acknowledging the challenge posed by Maize, who came into the game with a strong 3-1 record. The victory was particularly sweet, closing out the Wildcats’ spring break schedule on a high note.
The Rogers Baseball Four-State Festival continues to be a highlight for local baseball enthusiasts, showcasing talent from across the region. With performances like Har-Ber’s, it’s easy to see why. As the Wildcats head into the rest of their season, fans can only hope their determination and teamwork continue to lead to exciting finishes and victories on the field.
