MacKenzie Gwin turned a potential heartbreaker into a celebration at Razorback Field in Fayetteville.
With six seconds remaining in the match, the sophomore striker fired a left-footed shot from the near post that beat Florida goalkeeper Jayden Emmanuel to give the Arkansas Razorbacks a 2-1 win and preserve their postseason hopes.
The rhythm of the rain-soaked evening had been turning against the Hogs. Florida had pushed late, putting pressure on the Arkansas defense. When the ball found its way out to the right sideline in the final moments, the outcome looked already written in pen.
Gwin took the touch and angled upfield. She saw the opening. When Florida defender Carlota Martins moved to close her down with a sliding tackle, Gwin piroueted past her, leaving the defender in the turf. She was now one-on-one with Emmanuel.
Gwin didn’t hesitate. She angled inside and fired. The ball nestled into the bottom corner as the referee blew the final whistle.
The sight on the turf was one of pure relief. Gwin sprinted toward the sideline with her arms flailing, head thrown back, before a sea of red jerseys swarmed her, grabbing her jersey as she was tackled to the ground by celebrating teammates.
“I’ve been waiting for a moment, for me, to gain a lot of confidence,” Gwin said. “That was definitely the moment, and I feel like I’ve needed that. I’ve had so much faith put into me from our coaching staff and our team. They all called it earlier. They were like, ‘Oh, you can do this.’
Gwin’s second goal of the season snatched victory from the jaws of a draw amidst high stakes. The significance wasn’t lost on the squad.
With the feeling of the clock dripping away, Gwin knew this moment on the pitch in Northwest Arkansas could define the season. Coach Jon Arrow and the staff have leaned on Gwin since early in the campaign, telling her when the ball found her feet that the team believed in her.
She finally delivered
