Gold medalist Laurie Hernandez featured guest during Arkansas Democrat-Gazette All-Arkansas Preps Awards Banquet

Laurie Hernandez, 2016 Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics, was the featured guest Saturday at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette All-Arkansas Preps Awards Banquet held at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock. The event honored more than 400 of the state’s top high school athletes and coaches across various sports.

At 26 years old, Hernandez took time to sign copies of her book and engage with many of the honorees before participating in a question-and-answer session. Local radio personality David Bazzel led the discussion, giving attendees a unique opportunity to hear from the retired gymnast up close.

Hernandez won her Olympic gold medal as part of the United States gymnastics team at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Her teammates included Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Madison Kocian, and Aly Raisman, who collectively won the team competition. Hernandez also earned an individual silver medal in the balance beam event during those games.

The All-Arkansas Preps Awards Banquet is an annual event that celebrates the achievements of high school athletes and coaches from across Arkansas. The ceremony recognizes individual and team performances from the previous school year in sports such as football, basketball, track and field, baseball, and others.

By hosting a nationally recognized figure like Hernandez, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette aims to inspire young athletes in the state and acknowledge their dedication to their sports. With more than 400 attendees honored, the banquet represents one of the largest gatherings of high school athletic talent in Arkansas.

As a retired athlete who has leveraged her Olympic success into advocacy and authoring, Hernandez’s presence underscored the potential career paths available to athletes beyond competition. Her background also highlights the significance of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork in reaching elite levels.

Little Rock’s Statehouse Convention Center served as a central location for the event, drawing participants from urban and rural parts of the state. The banquet remains a key fixture in the Arkansas sports calendar, providing both recognition and networking opportunities for high school athletes and coaches.

Similar focus on regional sports development and community engagement has been noted in Northwest Arkansas events and organizations, although this particular banquet centers on statewide high school athletics.
