Freeman Health System has announced an agreement to purchase four hospitals in Northwest Arkansas. The acquisition includes Northwest Medical Centers in Bentonville and Springdale, Willow Creek Women’s Hospital, and Siloam Springs Regional Hospital. These facilities are currently owned by a subsidiary of Community Health Systems Inc.
The transaction, which also encompasses associated outpatient centers and medical practices, marks Freeman’s first expansion into the Arkansas market. Matthew Fry, president and CEO of Freeman Health System, described the move as a “natural extension” of their existing regional operations. While the deal awaits regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026, it represents a significant development in local healthcare.
Freeman Health System, a not-for-profit organization based in Joplin, Missouri, operates several hospitals and clinics across southwest Missouri. By extending its reach into Northwest Arkansas, the system aims to bolster healthcare services in a region experiencing rapid population growth and increased demand for medical care. This acquisition could improve access to healthcare services for residents of Bentonville, Springdale, and surrounding areas.
Northwest Arkansas has been witnessing significant population and economic growth in recent years, resulting in heightened demand for healthcare services. The acquisition by Freeman Health System is expected to address some of these needs by providing enhanced medical services and potentially reducing patient wait times.
Community Health Systems Inc., the current owner of the hospitals, has been divesting several of its assets nationwide as part of a strategic realignment to focus on core markets. This transaction allows them to streamline their operations while ensuring that the acquired hospitals continue to serve their communities effectively under Freeman’s management.
The agreement comes amid ongoing discussions about regional healthcare infrastructure and capacity challenges, such as those addressed by local initiatives like the Northwest Arkansas commission studying tolls for I-42 funding. The acquisition is poised to play a role in addressing these broader regional healthcare concerns.
Freeman Health System’s entry into the Northwest Arkansas market is a notable shift in the local healthcare landscape. As the deal progresses, residents and healthcare professionals will be watching closely to see how this expansion impacts service provision and community health outcomes.
