Fayetteville Animal Services is cutting adoption fees in half this weekend to find homes for the pending population in its kennels.
The shelter is participating in the 12th annual national Clear the Shelters campaign, offering half-price adoption rates on Friday, Aug. 21, and Saturday, Aug. 22. Visitors can walk the aisles of the facility on the north side of Fayetteville and adopt a dog, puppy, cat, or kitten for a reduced rate.
Typically, adoptions come with a price tag that doesn’t always account for the medical work required to get a pet ready for household living. This weekend, however, the reduced fees cover the essentials. All animals available for adoption will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. This covers the upfront costs that often deter locals from adopting.
Walkers inside the shelter will likely spot Bratwurst, a 3-year-old dog waiting for someone to take him home. He is one of the animals the city hopes to move out of the indoor-outdoor kennels and into living rooms in Northwest Arkansas.
“We always look forward to this event every year to increase visibility for the amazing pets at our shelter,” said Justine Lentz, the city’s animal services superintendent.
The Clear the Shelters initiative began as a nationwide effort to clear shelter waiting lists and boost funding for rescue organizations. In Fayetteville, the event provides a specific opening for residents to skip the usual $50 to $100 fee barriers and see if the right match is wandering the aisles.
Those interested in meeting the dogs or cats should visit the Fayetteville Animal Services facility during normal business hours on Aug. 21 or 22. Proof of current rabies vaccination and a valid government-issued ID from the primary applicant are required to finalize an adoption.
