Fayetteville outdoor enthusiasts got a big boost to their wishlist on Monday.
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board voted unanimously to recommend the city purchase roughly 42 acres of land just southwest of Wedington Drive and Broyles Avenue. That’s a significant chunk of ground on the growing west side of town, and it’s being eyed for future park space and recreation.
The current asking price for the parcels is $7.6 million. Look at real estate costs in major metros like New York or Los Angeles, and that figure would barely get you a parking space. But here in Northwest Arkansas, when the price tag is in the millions, you’re usually talking about a legitimate investment in the community’s quality of life.
The recommendation came from a subcommittee the Parks board formed a few years ago with the specific mission of finding new land as growth continues to expand out from downtown. It’s a deliberate move to ensure the city has room to breathe, especially in areas that are seeing new residential development.
Property records indicate the land has been owned by the Marinoni family for decades, suggesting the transition from private stewards to public parkland keeps local history intact. That Hunter family legacy is part of what made this a viable option.
For now, this stays a recommendation. The City Council has the final say and will need to approve the budget before any of that money changes hands. It will be a heavy lift to find that budget space, but for a community that spends so much time outside, securing even a few more acres of accessible green space is a hustle worth watching.
Residents looking to follow the lead-up to the decision (and hopefully see it approved) should keep tabs on upcoming City Council agendas over the next few months.
