Fayetteville nonprofit announces summer autism awareness 5K and 1K

Mark your calendars, folks. On June 27, Mitchell’s Mountain, a Fayetteville nonprofit, is gearing up to host the “Dash for Hope” at Kessler Mountain — a 5K and 1K race designed to support individuals with autism and their families. The event aims to raise awareness during Autism Awareness Month, which is this April.

The 1K portion of the race will start bright and early at 7:30 a.m., with the more competitive, chip-timed 5K following once the last 1K participant crosses the finish line. This sequence allows runners of all levels to participate and show their support for a cause that’s close to home for many in Northwest Arkansas.

Greg Curoso, the founder of Mitchell’s Mountain, initiated the event to shine a light on the needs of older children and adults with autism, as well as other intellectual and developmental disabilities. Curoso’s personal inspiration comes from his son, Mitchell, who was diagnosed with autism. The nonprofit’s long-term vision is to create a community encompassing a care facility that supports individuals with severe autism as they transition into adulthood.

Mitchell’s Mountain has been a beacon for families navigating the complexities of autism in Fayetteville and beyond. By hosting events like the Dash for Hope, the organization not only raises funds but also strengthens the community’s understanding and acceptance of autism. It’s events like these that make Northwest Arkansas not just a place to live, but a place to belong.

Kessler Mountain, known for its scenic trails and community-friendly atmosphere, offers an ideal backdrop for the race. Whether you’re a seasoned runner looking to beat your personal best in the 5K or just want to enjoy a leisurely stroll in the 1K, this event promises to be a memorable morning filled with camaraderie and support.

Fayetteville residents and neighboring communities are encouraged to lace up their running shoes and participate, either by joining the race or cheering from the sidelines. As part of the event, participants and attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the challenges faced by individuals with autism and how they can make a difference in their lives.

While the primary goal is to raise awareness and foster inclusivity, the Dash for Hope also serves as a fundraiser to help Mitchell’s Mountain continue its mission of providing essential services and developing long-term care solutions for individuals with autism. It’s grassroots efforts like these that reinforce the spirit of community in Fayetteville, reminding us all of the power of support and togetherness.
