The Farmington Public Library has unveiled a brand-new outdoor space designed for both recreation and inspiration. Thanks to an $80,000 grant from the Walton Family Foundation and the Project for Public Spaces, the area now features a small stage, a new pergola, picnic tables, a walking path, and an eye-catching sculpture.
Marie Ingersoll, the library director, hopes this addition will become a cherished spot for families and individuals in Farmington. She envisions it as a place where people can gather for outdoor storytelling sessions, small concerts, or simply to enjoy a quiet moment with a good book. The space was officially opened to the public on May 2, 2026, marked by a celebration where guests posed beside the new sculpture.
The development of this outdoor area is part of a broader effort to transform the library into more than just a place to borrow books. With the new outdoor facilities, the library aims to become a community hub where families can create lasting memories. Parents can bring their children for an afternoon of fun and learning, whether that’s participating in a library-organized activity or enjoying a picnic at one of the new tables.
The small stage is expected to host a variety of events, from local musicians and performers to community speakers. The walking path provides a serene route for morning or afternoon strolls, a perfect way to unwind for residents of all ages. And when the weather is nice, the pergola offers a shaded spot for reading or chatting with friends.
Ingersoll expressed her excitement about the potential of the outdoor space to bring people together in new and creative ways. “We’re thrilled to offer this to the community,” she said, noting that the library is always looking for ways to better serve Farmington’s residents.
With these new features, the Farmington Public Library hopes to engage residents in a way that extends beyond traditional library services. If you haven’t visited yet, consider stopping by with your family for a leisurely afternoon. Bring a blanket, a few snacks, and your favorite book—or let the library’s collection surprise you. It’s a great way to make the most of a sunny day in Northwest Arkansas.
