Conway police arrested a homeless man on Saturday after a 99-year-old woman fought off an intruder who entered her home in the early morning hours, authorities reported. Matthew Jayce Turk, 34, faces charges of aggravated residential burglary, second-degree battery, and second-degree sexual assault.
The incident occurred in a residence on the 1800 block of Washington Avenue, less than two blocks northwest of the Hendrix College campus. According to the Conway Police Department, the elderly woman awoke to find Turk inside her home. Despite her advanced age, she physically fought back against the intruder, causing him to flee the residence.
Responding officers identified Turk as the suspect and later found him at the Faulkner County Library, where they took him into custody. Police said Turk sustained injuries during the altercation and received medical treatment after his arrest.
Turk is believed to be from the Kansas City, Missouri, area and has reportedly only been in Conway for a few weeks. Authorities stated he has no known connections to the city or the victim.
