Fayetteville’s football team stumbled out of the gate in a 27-14 loss at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater Saturday, dropping their season opener and serving an unkind welcome to new head coach Daniel Lucas.
The Bulldogs struggled to find rhythm against a tough Cowboys squad, with turnovers proving to be the undoing. Fayetteville committed four interceptions and lost two fumbles, all of which shifted momentum and field position, frustrating any chance the Bulldogs had at mounting a sustained comeback.
Lucas, stepping into the role after a coaching shuffle this offseason, saw his team falter early. Oklahoma State struck first with a 45-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring, and Fayetteville could never quite settle into their offense. Despite some bright spots on both sides of the ball, the Bulldogs failed to capitalize when it mattered most.
Quarterback Jared Howe attempted 32 passes but finished with just 178 yards and two interceptions. The running game fared better, with sophomore running back Elijah Torres rushing for 85 yards on 18 carries, but the lack of consistent offensive drives limited scoring opportunities.
Defensively, Fayetteville managed to sack the Cowboys’ quarterback four times and held Oklahoma State to under 300 total yards, but critical lapses in coverage led to two passing touchdowns and a field goal that kept scores out of reach.
Special teams also struggled, with a punt return fumble in the third quarter setting up a Cowboys touchdown that widened the gap to 20-7. That sequence seemed to deflate the Bulldogs’ hopes, despite a late touchdown run by Torres that narrowed the margin.
Lucas addressed the team’s turnovers after the game, emphasizing a need to protect the football and improve situational awareness moving forward. “We have the talent on this roster,” Lucas said, “but ball security has to be non-negotiable if we want to compete at a higher level.”
The Bulldogs now turn their attention back to Rogers, where Fayetteville will host Bentonville next week. Bentonville delivered a strong performance in their own opener, making this upcoming matchup a test early in the season for Lucas and company.
This loss hands the Bulldogs a 0-1 record to start the 2026 season, but the schedule soon eases with a pair of home games at Bulldog Stadium on Garland Avenue, where local fans will be eager to see how Lucas rallies his squad.
Expect tighter ball control and a sharper defense from Fayetteville. Until then, the still-fresh Wolverines will enjoy bragging rights after shutting down Fayetteville’s offense in this one — a reminder there’s plenty to fix before the conference slate rolls around.
